Aetherae
Overview
People are called Aetheraens; adjective, Aetheran
Terrain: This crescent-shaped island is mostly plains and forests, with several ranges of foothills and mountains, and four major rivers. For more information, see Places to Note.
People: About 60% of the population is comprised of Elves, who have currently come to power (see Government). The remaining population varies, but tends to submit overall to the dominant Elven culture, and it is not uncommon for members of a given race to settle near each other. As a culture, Aetheraen's value light, nature, and grace, with an emphasis on etiquette. They are also passionate about music and dance, their chief forms of entertainment.
Government: The Elves are currently in power in a constitutional monarchy where a King, or Regnator, rules supreme, but must consult fairly regularly with a council, called the Synedrus, especially for passing laws or distributing finances. The 100 members of the Synedrus are elected by popular vote, and hence can come from any social class. However, there is a requirement that each of the three main classes have at least 7 representatives at all times. The application to be considered for vote into the Synedrus is not quite as fair, and most members of the government are Elves, although the Synedrus also requires 3 members to not be of the dominant ethnic group. The Regnator's rule is hereditary from father to son, and if the only heir is a daughter, the Synedrus has the right to vote whether to make the daughter Queen or choose a new King from the uppermost class of Elves. The current Regnator is Darius Reviran, Strong Warrior.
Economy: Aetherae is largely self-supporting, but it also makes quite a profit in trade. Its main exports are "exotic" woods and wood products, and textiles. Its main imports are leather and glass, follwed at a bit of a distance by foreign fruits and vegetables. Aetherae is famous for its fine bows and arrows, superior to most even when made of typical wood as opposed to the Gold or Silver Trees' wood, which are also valuable commodities even when in raw form. The finely-woven and artfully patterned textiles are purchased by many of the wealthy abroad. Most precious is Aetherae's Elegans Wool, which is as light and smooth as cotton, but warmer and longer-lasting. Aetherae has a fairly wealthy overall economy, with less than 30% poor enough to truly be considered peasantry. However, only about 20% is extremely wealthy. The plenty with which Aetheraen's live allow for many beautification projects in cities and fairly lavish homes. In particular, Aetheraen's like to show their status in the finery of their clothes and animals.
