Classification: Griffalcons are a smaller, swifter variety of griffon. Griffalcons are still considered griffons.
Size: Griffalcons are smaller in size and stature than the common griffon. Griffalcons measure between 3 and 4 feet high at the shoulder, weigh between 250 and 400 lbs, and have wingspans of 18 to 20 feet.
Appearance: Griffalcons are similar in appearance to the common griffon, apart from their smaller size. A griffalcon’s wings are long and thin, allowing the griffalcon to make steeper dives and tighter turns. A griffalcon’s beak is also longer and more curved than that of a common griffon. Griffalcons have four forward facing toes and one rear facing toe on their forelegs. A griffalcon’s toes are more flexible than a griffon’s, allowing it to grip objects with more precision. Griffalcons also have a more streamlined body shape than a common griffon. While this means that a griffalcon has less muscle mass than the common griffon, it also means that a griffalcon can move with greater speed both overland and in the air.
Anatomy: A griffalcon’s anatomy is almost identical to that of the common griffon.
Development: Griffalcon eggs are smaller than griffon eggs, measuring only ½ of a foot in diameter and weighing only 2 to 2 ½ lbs. Griffalcons are actually slower to develop than griffons and do not reach maturity until their sixth or seventh year. Male griffalcons have been known to live for 60 to 65 years, while females have been known to live for more than 70.
Abilities: Griffalcons share the magical abilities of common griffons, as well as their sharp senses. Griffalcons are also fierce fighters and excel at combat both on the ground and in the air. Because of their smaller size and leaner, more streamlined shape, griffalcons are much more precise flyers than common griffons.
Magic: Griffalcons are much more potent magic users than common griffons. While they share the magical abilities of common griffons, griffalcons are more adept at using these skills. In addition, griffalcons have the ability to become basic magic users. Some of the most advanced can learn simple spells which allow them to create illusions, communicate with animals, control the wind and weather, and create fire or another elemental force. Such griffalcons are widely respected by their kind and even more deadly to encounter.
Weaknesses: Griffalcons share the weaknesses of common griffons. A griffalcon’s smaller size also makes it less powerful in physical combat than a common griffon.
Habitat: Griffalcons share the habitats of the common griffons and often roost alongside griffon flocks in the mountains of Bruman and Srada.
Society: Like common griffons, griffalcons live in flocks consisting of one or more family groups. Leadership of the flock is held by a dominant male griffalcon, who is often the flock’s most powerful magic user. Griffalcons do occasionally join griffon flocks, and vice versa, and hybrid offspring are not unheard of. Such chicks often inherit the best traits of their parents: the griffon’s size and strength and the griffalcon’s magical ability.
Outlook/ Alignment: Griffalcons protect their young with the same ferocity as common griffons and often use their magical skill to defend their nests. Most griffalcons are chaotic neutral in alignment.
Lore: Griffalcons are much rarer than common griffons and are much less common in Domhantirian lore. Like griffons, griffalcons have little in the way of myths or legends of their own.
Significance: Griffalcons, being sentient in nature, can not be domesticated like an ordinary beast. Griffons and griffalcons alike have been captured by the humans of Talambria and Srada and the dwarves of Bruman for use as mounts and beasts of burden for centuries. Though they have made little collective effort to throw off their chains, their spirits are difficult to break, and a griffon or griffalcon forced to act against its will is a dangerous creature indeed. Occasionally, a particularly noble griffalcon will willingly bear a rider into battle and fight for a just cause, but these instances have grown few in recent years.
